Spinnaker Toastmasters Club is a popular and successful community club which meets in Plimmerton, Porirua City, dedicated to developing and promoting public speaking and leadership skills. Our members come from Whitby, Aotea, Paremata, Plimmerton, Pukerua Bay, Camborne, Titahi Bay and Papakowhai, plus others from further afield. We welcome guests, and guest speakers, and we're always looking for new members.
If you want to develop your public speaking skills, so you can speak confidently in front of an audience, and learn leadership skills, then Spinnaker Toastmasters is for you.
Spinnaker Toastmasters Club meets at the St Andrew's Anglican Parish Centre, 11 Steyne Avenue, Plimmerton, on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 7.30 pm - 9.30 pm. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 years on acceptance of application to join. We welcome members who wish to develop their English speaking skills if it is not their first language.
At our fortnightly meetings, you'll learn the skills of speaking confidently before an audience. At first, you'll participate in table topics (known as impromptu speaking) where you'll be given a topic to talk about for 2 minutes. Usually you just talk about yourself the first time.
When you join the club, you'll introduce yourself with a 4-6 minute Icebreaker speech. Then you'll give prepared speeches between 7 and 10 minutes long on topics of your choice, covering a wide range of themes, such as using body language, using your voice, being sincere, persuading, and inspiring your audience.
You'll also learn how to give feedback to other speakers, by evaluating their performance against the speech project criteria in the Toastmasters manual.
View the details of the first speech project by downloading the Icebreaker Speech Project (139KB pdf). You can also read the Breaking the Ice, Getting Started and Table Topics pages on the Toastmasters International website for more information.
Spinnaker has a datashow projector and laptop available for use by club members for Powerpoint Presentations, or you can supply your own laptop.
